suburb?
[edit]A rather remarkable stub - are you serious that in Norway a suburb has a capital?!? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Andre Engels (talk • contribs) 05:25, August 22, 2002
who said bærum was a suburb? bærum is a county of sorts. when you say suburb i imagine big flats/apartments. bærum has forests and houses. it's sort of like a rich, american suburb, only more diverce and less dencly populated. a lot of the people here does also work in bærum. there are suburbs in norway to, but they are closer to the city, and (i think) on the east side, not on the west. (which is the rich side :p) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.166.254.195 (talk) 17:14, September 3, 2006 (UTC)
- A suburb is a residential areas outside larger cities, and as such, Baerum has to be considered a suburb (compare the importance of Baerum to Bergen, Trondheim and Stavanger, cities which has app. the number of inhabitants). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.161.77.36 (talk) 09:46, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
- In short: Bærum is not and never has been a city, it is more of a district within which there happens to be many agglomerated settlements. Punkmorten (talk) 17:55, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- bærum is actually a city named sandvika.--84.208.75.65 (talk) 19:19, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

- Bærum is not a city named Sandvika. Sandvika is the main city in Bærum. Sandvika achieved city status after meeting criteria regarding number of inhabitants and infrastructure. Sandvika also has its own city council, so yes it is indeed a city.
Addressing the other discussion regarding suburb and county: It is more a county than a suburb according to American standards of suburbs and counties. Driving pass Orange County outside LA from time to time I do see a lot of resemblance. Following dictionary definitions a county is also a region consistent of several places, while a suburb is referred to as the residential ares outside a city (which would rather be Holmenkollen and Bygdøy). As noted above, one of you said that Bærum has their own industry and city center with many people working inside Bærum. This also has to be taken into consideration. I conclude that Bærum is a county, not a suburb. Chrisniel91 (talk) 21:43, 30 March 2013 (UTC)Chrisniel91Chrisniel91 (talk) 21:43, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

[edit]- Who is Line Victoria Sverdrup? She does not show up any where as either model or ski jumper. I suggest we remove her from the wiki as notable person Chrisniel91 (talk) 22:00, 30 March 2013 (UTC)Chrisniel91Chrisniel91 (talk) 22:00, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

[edit]- The royal family has moved from Lommedalen to London. I suggest removing her as notable people. Perhaps just put a note saying they have moved. FlyttetChrisniel91 (talk) 22:06, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

Requested move 26 December 2024
[edit]
It has been proposed in this section that Bærum be renamed and moved to Baerum. A bot will list this discussion on the requested moves current discussions subpage within an hour of this tag being placed. The discussion may be closed 7 days after being opened, if consensus has been reached (see the closing instructions). Please base arguments on article title policy, and keep discussion succinct and civil. Please use {{subst:requested move}} . Do not use {{requested move/dated}} directly. |
Bærum → Baerum – Of the first five English-language sources that I found cited in this article and the Bærum mosque shooting article (not cherry-picking), specifically [1], [2], [3], [4], and [5], I found that none of them use the ligature. Such ligatures are uncommon in English. — BarrelProof (talk) 04:11, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
- Support, see Zurich and that move earlier this year. I searched for English sources and they virtually all use "ae". The only English source I could find that uses the ligature is Britannica and they always use non-English stylings (again, see Zurich discussion). PARAKANYAA (talk) 05:55, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
- Strong oppose, non-existing name made up by writers who lack a certain character on their keyboard. Britannica uses Bærum. No place names in Norway are subject to a "Zurich rule". Zurich is the official English form of Zürich used by the English version of Zurich's official website and established for centuries, "Baerum" has never been established and is not used by Bærum's official English-language website. Geschichte (talk) 09:27, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose as MOS:LIG, which is the argument the proposer initially used to suggest a name change to the Bærum mosque shooting article, does not apply to proper names. All the sources cited by the proposer are specific to the mosque shooting article. Unlike Zurich, there does not appear to be a common English translation of this Norwegian place name. One Norwegian - English Dictionary does not even offer a translation of the name. Even Wiktionary uses a ligature for its entry, and only offers the "ae" spelling as an alternative. Other English language sources are divided, with many seeming to favour the Norwegian spelling with the ligature. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 21:59, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
- Wikipedia prefers to use English-language independent sources and is basically indifferent to "officialness". The Collins, Oxford and Cambridge dictionaries don't have entries for either form of the city's name. — BarrelProof (talk) 22:17, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
